5-Day Moon Stone Trek to Machu Picchu

Tour Itinerary

Explore our expertly designed itinerary below, crafted to showcase breathtaking views and provide unique adventures every step of the way.

Day 1: From Killarumiyoc to Chillipawa – A Path Through Time

Your adventure on the Moon Stone Trek begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel, setting the stage for a day steeped in history and natural beauty. Our first destination is Killarumiyoc, the Moon Temple, a site of significant historical importance. Here, amidst ancient relics, you’ll enjoy a gourmet breakfast, perfectly blending culinary delight with cultural immersion.

A short 40-minute drive takes us to Varpiso, the starting point of our trek. At 3,257 meters, you’ll meet the horses that will accompany us on this journey. The first leg of the trek is a fulfilling three and a half hour ascent to Huatta, an ancient pre-Inca fortress perched at 3,924 meters. This site is a treasure trove of history, with ongoing excavations offering a window into the past.

Post-lunch and exploration at Huatta, we continue through varied landscapes for another three and a half hours until reaching the welcoming village of Chillipawa at 3,750 meters. This charming community offers a glimpse into the warm hospitality that Peru is celebrated for, enriching your trekking experience.

Accommodation: Camping at Chillipawa
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, and Dinner
Hiking: Approx. 7-8 hours, 10 km

Awaken to the tranquility of Chillipawa and fuel up with a hearty breakfast, accompanied by the stimulating aromas of coca tea or local coffee. The day’s hike commences with a challenging but rewarding three and a half hour climb, leading to an idyllic lunch spot at 4,438 meters.

After refueling, the ascent continues to the highest point of our trek, the Puccacasa pass at 4,643 meters. Here, you’re greeted with awe-inspiring views, including the magnificent Mt. Ausangate and the imposing Mount Veronica. The descent from Puccacasa is an equally stunning two and a half hour journey, winding through landscapes home to llamas, alpacas, and traditional potato farms, culminating at the Chancachuco campsite at 4,177 meters. As evening falls, enjoy a satisfying dinner against the breathtaking backdrop of the Huaynay Glaciers.

Accommodation: Camping at Chancachuco
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, and Dinner
Hiking: Approx. 7-8 hours, 11.5 km

The third day of your trek unveils the spectacular blend of natural beauty and historical richness that defines this journey. The day begins with a revitalizing breakfast, preparing you for an exploration through the stunning Puncuyoc canyon and the verdant Silque Valley. The initial two-hour descent is a gentle introduction to the day, allowing you to fully appreciate the lush surroundings and the tranquil flow of the stream.

This part of the trek follows a 16 km stretch along an ancient Inca Canal, an outstanding example of Incan engineering prowess. Keep an eye out for the native Spectacled Bear, a rare and fascinating sight. The trail then ascends for two hours towards Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) and the Inca Quarry. This area is frozen in time, showcasing remnants of Inca constructions, abandoned stone works, and an early wheel design. The occasional mummy sighting adds an element of mystery to your adventure.

The day concludes with a gentle 45-minute walk to your camp at the Inca Quarry (3,525 meters). Settle in for a relaxing evening, complete with a ‘happy hour,’ a sumptuous dinner, and breathtaking sunset views over the Sacred Valley.

Accommodation: Camping at the Inca Quarry
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, and Dinner
Hiking: Approx. 6-7 hours, 10 km

Day four presents a more relaxed and scenic hike, marking the transition from remote trails to the gateway of Machu Picchu. After enjoying breakfast amidst the Andean mountains, embark on a three and a half hour descent to the historical town of Ollantaytambo, situated at 2,792 meters. This journey takes you through regions rich in history and scenic beauty, rarely visited by the typical traveler.

In Ollantaytambo, a delightful lunch awaits before you board the train to Aguas Calientes. This charming town offers an afternoon of leisure and exploration. You might choose to unwind in the hot springs, stroll through the local market, or simply relax and soak in the unique atmosphere. Dinner at a local restaurant will provide a taste of the region’s culinary delights.

Accommodation: Hotel in Aguas Calientes
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner + snacks
Hiking: Approx. 3-4 hours, 7 km

Your incredible journey reaches its zenith on the final day with an early start, leading to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. The bus ride from Aguas Calientes ascends to this ancient citadel, arriving in time for a breathtaking sunrise. This moment, witnessing the day’s first light bathing Machu Picchu in a golden glow, is an experience that resonates with profound beauty and tranquility.

Embark on a two-hour guided exploration of Machu Picchu, where the mysteries and architectural wonders of this iconic Incan site are unveiled. Learn about the history, the intricate construction techniques, and the many theories surrounding its purpose. After the guided tour, you have the opportunity to roam freely through the ruins. Climb the terraces, explore hidden corners, or simply sit and absorb the majestic surroundings of this world-renowned wonder.

Following your descent to Aguas Calientes, you’ll have some time to enjoy lunch and reflect on the morning’s exploration before boarding the expedition train to Ollantaytambo. From there, a private van awaits to transport you back to Cusco, marking the end of your unforgettable Moon Stone Trek to Machu Picchu.

This journey not only takes you through breathtaking landscapes and ancient trails but also connects you deeply with the rich cultural and historical tapestry of the Inca civilization. As you return to Cusco, you carry with you memories of an adventure that transcends mere travel, leaving an indelible mark on your soul.
