5-Day Choquequirao Trek

Tour Itinerary

Explore our expertly designed itinerary below, crafted to showcase breathtaking views and provide unique adventures every step of the way.

Day 1: Cusco to Capuliyoc to Chiquiska to Playa Rosalinas – Embarking on an Ancient Trail

Our expedition begins with an early morning departure from Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. As we journey through the Andean landscape, the four-hour drive to Capuliyoc (2,900m) is an experience in itself, offering glimpses of rural life and the ever-changing scenery of the Andes.

Arriving at Capuliyoc, the starting point of our trek, we’re greeted by our team of muleteers and horses. This is where our descent into the depths of the Apurimac Canyon begins. The trail winds its way through breathtaking landscapes, offering panoramic views that stretch across the rugged terrain. The path leads us to Chiquiska (1,900m), a charming spot nestled amidst the grandeur of the Vilcabamba range. Here, we pause for a freshly prepared lunch, taking in the stunning vistas.

The afternoon hike continues the descent to Playa Rosalinas (1,500m), a beautiful campsite by the Apurimac River. This area, known for its diverse flora and fauna, offers a serene backdrop for our first night under the stars. As night falls, we gather for a warm tea, followed by a dinner that blends local culinary traditions with the nourishment needed for trekking.

Accommodation: Camping
Meals: Lunch, Tea, and Dinner
Hiking: Approx. 4-5 hours, 8.5 km

With the dawn’s first light, Playa Rosalinas comes alive. After an energizing breakfast, we embark on the most challenging part of our trek: the 5-hour ascent to Marampata. This trail section tests your endurance, but the rewards are unparalleled. The switchback path takes us through a landscape dotted with small farms and native vegetation. This region is renowned for its sugar cane production, a vital local crop, and a staple in Andean communities.

As we ascend, the valley unfolds beneath us, offering spectacular views. The chance to witness condors gliding gracefully in the sky is a moment to cherish. These majestic birds, revered by the Incas, symbolize freedom and strength in Andean culture.

Reaching Marampata (2,900m), we find ourselves on a natural balcony overlooking the Apurimac River and the distant Choquequirao ruins. After lunch, the afternoon is yours to rest and acclimatize to the altitude. Marampata, a small rural community, offers an authentic glimpse into highland living. As the sun sets, the group gathers for a communal tea time, followed by dinner, sharing stories and experiences of the day.

Accommodation: Camping
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, and Dinner
Hiking: Approx. 5-6 hours, 12 km

Day 3 is dedicated to the exploration of the enigmatic Choquequirao. After breakfast at Marampata, we embark on a one-hour hike to the gates of Choquequirao Park. The site, often referred to as the ‘Cradle of Gold’, is an expansive Inca complex that rivals Machu Picchu in grandeur but is visited by far fewer tourists, offering a more intimate encounter with Inca history.

We spend the day unraveling the mysteries of this hidden gem, set against a backdrop of breathtaking Andean scenery. Your guide will lead you through an array of structures including ceremonial temples, intricate terraces, and residential areas. Perhaps the most fascinating is the Llama Terraces, where the Incas created stone llamas in the walls of the terraces, a testament to their artistic and agricultural prowess.

Choquequirao, still partially covered by the jungle, is a live archaeological site where new discoveries continue to be made. We break for lunch amidst these ancient ruins, allowing for a truly immersive experience. The afternoon takes us to the lower parts of the site, like Pacchayoc, where more terraces reveal the Inca’s masterful land management. As the sun begins to set, we trek back to our camp at Marampata, where tea and dinner await, capping off a day filled with awe and discovery.

Accommodation: Camping
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, and Dinner
Hiking: Moderate exploration of Choquequirao’s vast expanse, approx. 3-4 hours

As dawn breaks over Marampata, we start our day with the captivating views of the canyon, reflecting on the incredible history and natural beauty we’ve experienced. Departing from the majestic Choquequirao, we begin our trek back towards Chiquiska, but first, we descend to Playa Rosalinas, where we pause for a rejuvenating lunch.

This part of the trek allows us to revisit the stunning landscapes of the Apurimac Canyon from a fresh perspective. The descent to Playa Rosalinas is a gradual journey through varying terrains, flanked by the lush greenery of the canyon. Here, we reconnect with the river’s soothing sounds, a stark contrast to the quiet majesty of Choquequirao’s ruins.

After lunch, we tackle the ascent to Chiquiska. This section of the hike challenges your stamina but rewards you with ever-changing vistas of the canyon and an opportunity to spot Andean wildlife, perhaps even catching another glimpse of the majestic condors. The hike to Chiquiska, approximately 6-7 hours in total for the day, is both physically invigorating and mentally refreshing.

Upon reaching Chiquiska, we set up camp for our final night on the trail. Surrounded by the peaceful ambiance of the valley, we gather for dinner, sharing tales of our journey and soaking in the last moments of this remarkable trek.

Accommodation: Camping
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, and Dinner
Hiking: Approx. 6-7 hours, 14 km

The final day of our Choquequirao adventure begins with the sun rising over Chiquiska. After breakfast, we embark on an early hike, eager to embrace the last moments of our journey. The 3-hour trek to Capuliyoc is a gradual uphill climb, offering a last look at the spectacular canyon landscapes as the morning sun illuminates the peaks and valleys.

Reaching Capuliyoc signifies the end of our trekking experience. Here, we gather for a final celebratory lunch, a time to express our gratitude to the muleteers, cooks, and guides who have been integral to our adventure. This moment is also an opportunity to reflect on the journey, the challenges overcome, and the memories created.

In the afternoon, we board our private transport for the return drive to Cusco. The journey is punctuated by a visit to the Saywite archaeological site, home to the enigmatic Saywite Monolith. This impressive stone, carved with more than 200 figures, offers a unique insight into Incan cosmology and their deep reverence for water and the natural world. Exploring Saywite is a fitting end to our trek, providing a deeper understanding of the Incan culture and their connection to the landscape.

The drive back to Cusco is a time for relaxation and reflection on the past five days’ experiences. We arrive in Cusco in the evening, marking the conclusion of our “Choquequirao Trek – 5 Days,” a journey that has taken us through some of the most breathtaking and historically rich landscapes in Peru.
